In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria, suspected bandits have carried out a daring attack that resulted in the deaths of two officers from the Nigeria Customs Service (NSC) in Kebbi State. The victims have been identified as Abdullahi Mohammed, a Customs Assistant II, and A. K. Shehu, an Inspector Customs. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, August 24, 2023, around 1:30 a.m. on the Dakingari-Koko road while the officers were on a routine patrol.

The assailants, believed to be bandits, ambushed the patrol team, leading to the tragic deaths of Mohammed and Shehu. The attackers also seized one of the officer’s AK-47 rifles before fleeing the scene. The audacity of the attack and the loss of life have raised concerns across Nigeria.

The Kebbi State Government has reacted strongly to the incident, expressing deep worry over the killing of the customs officers. Governor Nasir Idris, who could not personally attend due to prior commitments, was represented by Alhaji Yakubu Bala-Tafida, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), during the funeral prayer held at the Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital in Birnin Kebbi. Governor Idris referred to the incident as truly heart-wrenching.

Addressing the gathering, Bala-Tafida conveyed the governor’s condolences to the families of the deceased and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). He urged all those affected to find solace in accepting fate as a part of life and prayed for the souls of the departed to find eternal rest in Jannatul Firdaus.

Governor Idris assured everyone present that the Kebbi State Government stands by the families of the deceased officers. He pledged temporary support to assist them during this difficult time. He further reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bolstering security efforts within the state, collaborating closely with various security agencies to counteract the activities of bandits and other criminal elements.

Numerous dignitaries attended the somber event, including Safiyanu Garba-Bena, the Head of Service (HOS), Garba Muazu, Permanent Secretary Cabinet, Alhaji Abdulrahman, Director of Security, and Alhaji Ahmed Idris, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor.

Nigerians have taken to social media to express their condolences and frustration over the growing insecurity challenges in the country. Many are calling for stronger measures to be taken against banditry and crime, while others are lamenting the loss of dedicated officers who were working to ensure the safety of the nation. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need to address the security situation in Nigeria.
