NLC Demands Immediate Reversal of Latest Fuel Price Hike, Criticizes Government’s Approach

In a statement signed by its president, Joe Ajaero, the NLC condemned President Bola Tinubu’s administration for mishandling fuel pricing, arguing that repeated increases have only deepened the financial burden on Nigerians.

“We are dismayed by the latest increase in the pump price of petrol,” Ajaero said. “This government seems to be focused on raising fuel prices without considering how Nigerians can cope or offering any meaningful support.”

Ajaero also took aim at NNPCL, criticizing its monopolistic control over fuel prices. “Even if we follow the logic of market forces, it’s unacceptable that a private company like NNPCL is determining prices and acting as an unchecked monopoly. The government must rethink its strategy and come up with a clear plan for inclusive economic growth and development instead of relying on unstable policies and short-term fixes.”

The NLC warned that the latest fuel price hike is pushing more Nigerians into poverty, slashing production capacity, and leading to further job losses. Ajaero urged the government to reverse the increase, stating that past hikes have only worsened the economic situation without delivering any tangible benefits.

He concluded by challenging the government to be transparent about its long-term goals, saying, “The government should be honest with Nigerians about where it plans to take the country in the coming years.”
