According to Upah, the security operatives, claiming to search for seditious materials linked to the #EndBadGovernance protests, included members of the Nigeria Police Force and individuals in black t-shirts, possibly from the Department of State Services (DSS), along with others in plain clothes. They forcibly entered the NLC’s 10th floor, detained the security guard, and accessed the second floor, where they broke into offices and seized hundreds of books and publications.

The NLC condemned the invasion, highlighting that the security operatives lacked legal authorization for such an operation conducted late at night. They stressed that even during military rule, NLC offices were not subjected to such raids.

The NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) also condemned the excessive force used by security agents against protesters and the broad use of ‘treason’ to describe the protests. They expressed deep concern over the ongoing erosion of democratic principles and the suppression of peaceful protests.

The NLC has called for international attention to the deterioration of democratic norms in Nigeria, which they believe is moving towards a police state. They demand an international inquiry into the invasion, the immediate withdrawal of the security forces from the Labour House, and the return of all confiscated materials by August 8, 2024.

The NLC warns that if the harassment continues, they may instruct their members to stay home to ensure their safety. They caution that suppressing public discourse and engagement will only exacerbate the current difficulties faced by Nigerians.
