First responders were called around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, August 6, to an apartment complex on San Antonio’s north side after a man was discovered “lying on the ground unresponsive,” according to a police statement.

Investigators revealed that the 58-year-old man was carrying both his trash and a handgun when he slipped on mud and fell down a small hill. During the fall, his pistol discharged, with a bullet hitting him in the chest.

The exact cause of the gun’s discharge remains unclear, and it is not known whether the man was holding the pistol or if it was in a pocket or holster when he fell.

He was transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival, police said.

A neighbor told KENS that she heard the man cry out for help after the gunshot, and her brother rushed outside to assist. “I saw him from the window. He had fallen and was still shouting, ‘Help me!’” she recounted.
