Following widespread power outages, Nigerians took to social media, voicing concerns over another possible collapse of the National Grid.
However, shortly after the incident, the grid operators released a statement via their official X account. The statement neither confirmed nor denied the collapse but simply cautioned the public against spreading misinformation.
“Beware of Fake News Merchants!” the brief statement read.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, acknowledged that grid collapses would persist until repairs are completed on the Ugwachi-Bauchi-Makurdi transmission line. He explained that efforts to fix the line have been delayed due to ongoing security challenges in the northern region and emphasized the need to tackle these issues urgently.
According to Adelabu, the damaged line has placed excessive strain on existing infrastructure, leaving the grid vulnerable. He also highlighted that the grid’s outdated infrastructure requires a complete overhaul to improve its efficiency.
Addressing recent reports, the Minister refuted claims that the National Grid had collapsed 12 times in 2024. He clarified that there were only 8 incidents—5 full collapses and 3 partial ones.
Adelabu made these remarks in January while defending his ministry’s 2025 budget before the Senate Committee on Power. Although he couldn’t guarantee the grid would remain stable in the future, he assured that the Ministry of Power would act swiftly to restore services in the event of any disruptions.
