No More Small Deals For Foreigners – Umahi Reserves Sub-₦20bn Contracts For Local Builders

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has announced that the federal government will no longer award contracts below ₦20 billion to foreign contractors. Umahi disclosed this during an inspection of the dualization of the East-West Road (Section IIIA) from Eleme Junction, Port Harcourt, to Onne Junction in Rivers State. He noted that the Ministry of Works is also implementing a funding prioritization strategy for tax credit projects inherited from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL). He assured that both local and foreign contractors would be strictly monitored to ensure quality delivery.

Speaking further, the Minister highlighted technical lapses he observed in some projects, particularly where contractors left binder courses exposed without protective wearing coats. According to him, this practice leads to premature road failure, and he has directed that such substandard work will no longer be accepted across the six geo-political zones.
