The app confirmed that older versions of Android phones will lose support beginning January 1, 2025, while iPhones running iOS 12 will no longer be supported from May 2025.
According to a statement on WhatsApp’s Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, the Meta-owned platform will stop functioning on devices running Android KitKat, which was first released in 2013. Affected users will be notified in advance and advised to back up any important information before the support ends.
“Our goal is to provide a private and reliable service for as many people as possible,” the statement reads.
“To achieve this, we regularly review how WhatsApp is used, including our growing features for private global calling and messaging. Moving forward, WhatsApp support on devices running KaiOS will also end. Impacted users will be notified ahead of time to prepare.”
The app emphasized that users of these devices should save essential data elsewhere since backup and restoration features will not be available on unsupported devices.
WhatsApp explained that this decision reflects the need to keep pace with technological advancements and focus on supporting newer phone models.
“WhatsApp supports Android devices with version 5.0 or newer,” the statement clarified. “We periodically end support for older devices and operating systems to prioritize technological advancements. If your device or operating system is no longer supported, you will receive multiple reminders within WhatsApp to upgrade. We’ll also provide updates in this article for relevant information.”
Users who may be affected are encouraged to upgrade their devices to continue using the app seamlessly.
