Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Akwa Ibom have rescued a 12-year-old girl, Bright Sunday, who had been locked in a dilapidated building and subjected to torture for two years by her father, Ndifreke Sunday, and stepmother, Victory Sunday, in Ikot Ukporo Idoro village, Ibiono Ibom local government area.
Speaking to reporters in Uyo, the State Commandant of NSCDC, Mr. Eluyemi Eluwade, revealed that the abuse stemmed from the couple’s baseless accusation that the girl was a witch. The rescue operation was initiated after a complaint from the Ministry of Justice.
Mr. Eluwade stated that the suspects, aged 38 and 28 respectively, have been arrested for child deprivation and abuse under Section 10 of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law 2020. The arrest took place on September 10 at their residence following a report of the inhumane treatment endured by the child.
According to the victim’s account, she was confined in a rundown room, deprived of food, bathing, and regularly beaten by her stepmother. She was only fed once every two days, allowed to bathe twice a month, and was denied education.
The State Commandant condemned the barbaric treatment, describing it as callous and inhumane. He urged parents to refrain from such abusive practices, emphasizing that the NSCDC will continue to pursue offenders relentlessly.
The girl has been placed in a Gender-Based Violence Shelter Home for care and rehabilitation, while her father and stepmother will face legal proceedings through the appropriate prosecuting agency.
