Nursing Mother Seeks Divorce In Kaduna Shari’a Court, Demands ₦10,000 Monthly Child Support

A nursing mother, Firdausi Ahmad, has approached a Shari’a Court in Kaduna State seeking the dissolution of her three-year marriage to her husband, Malam Anas, and an order compelling him to provide ₦10,000 monthly for the upkeep of their eight-month-old daughter.

Ahmad appeared before the court on Thursday through her lawyer, Sani Sunusi, who presented her requests for divorce and financial support for the child, as well as compensation relating to the eight months she has spent breastfeeding their daughter.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the lawyer told the court that the marriage became troubled after Anas allegedly directed his wife to return to her parents’ home and remain there until he gave her permission to return to their matrimonial home.

Sunusi further alleged that the husband had neither visited Ahmad nor checked on their infant daughter since they left the family home.

The lawyer said his client was no longer willing to continue with the marriage and had therefore approached the court to seek a dissolution through Khul’i, a form of Islamic divorce initiated by a wife.

As part of her request, Ahmad indicated her willingness to refund the ₦100,000 bride price paid during the marriage to facilitate its dissolution.

Her lawyer also urged the court to direct Anas to pay ₦10,000 monthly towards their daughter’s needs. In addition, he requested financial support for the eight-month period during which Ahmad had been breastfeeding the child.

The requests were presented as part of the reliefs the nursing mother is seeking from the court as she pursues the end of the marriage and financial assistance for their daughter.

Anas was absent when the case came up for hearing on Thursday. Following his absence, the presiding judge, Yakubu Abdullahi, adjourned the matter until November 11 to allow Ahmad to present her witness or other evidence in support of her claims.

The judge also instructed the court registrar to send an invitation letter to the defendant and ensure that he attends the next hearing.

The case is expected to resume on the adjourned date, when the court will continue considering the complainant’s requests. The allegations against Anas have yet to be established before the court.
