Obasanjo emphasized that the Nigerian economy is suffering due to crude oil theft, estimating that out of the two million barrels per day quota, over 1.7 million are stolen. Responding to the question of reverting to the parliamentary system, he defended the presidential system, blaming the failure on Nigerians not adhering to established rules.

Meanwhile, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, former Chairman of the Northern Elders Forum, criticized Nigeria’s leadership, declaring it a failure. He called for a reassessment of the country’s political culture, asserting that no system is flawless. Abdullahi urged a return to the drawing board to rescue the nation from its leadership deficit.

Expressing concern over the power sector, Abdullahi lamented that a country with over 200 million people struggles to generate just 4,000 megawatts of power. He emphasized the need for the North to acknowledge its failures and collaborate on a way forward.

In summary, both Obasanjo and Abdullahi highlighted the challenges faced by Nigeria, attributing economic woes to crude oil theft and calling for a reevaluation of the political system and leadership. Abdullahi particularly urged a candid acknowledgment of failures and a collective effort to save the country.
