Speaking on Monday in Abuja during the opening of the 11th African Biblical Leadership Initiative (ABLI) Conference, organized by the Bible Society of Nigeria (BSN), Obasanjo expressed concern over the global shortage of capable leaders. He stated that the current leadership deficit poses a major challenge, not just in Africa, but specifically in Nigeria as well.

Obasanjo highlighted that essential qualities for leaders include knowledge, understanding, teamwork, and a collaborative spirit. He remarked, “If the world is lacking in anything today, it is effective leadership. The deficit of leadership is a significant problem globally, and we are not exempt as part of Africa and Nigeria.”

He stressed that Christian teachings provide valuable insights into leadership. “Key attributes such as knowledge and understanding are crucial. It’s disheartening when leaders discuss issues they clearly lack knowledge about.”

He further explained, “Knowledge alone is not enough; it must be accompanied by understanding. Without both, leadership effectiveness is compromised.”

Obasanjo urged leaders to clarify their objectives and missions, comparing it to military training where understanding the mission is paramount. “Many in leadership roles lack clear objectives. How can we expect them to lead effectively?.
