Obasanjo characterized Nigeria’s progress as a pattern of taking two steps forward and two steps backward. He made these comments during a meeting with six lawmakers from the House of Representatives, led by Ugochinyere Ikenga of the Ideato North and South Federal Constituency in Imo State. The other attendees were Abdulmalik Danga (Adavi/Okehi), Usman Midala (Askira-Uba/Hawul), Peter Aniekwe (Anambra East/West), and Kama Nkemkanma (Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo).

Obasanjo expressed that the lawmakers’ proposals for a single-term presidency, one-day nationwide elections, and power rotation between the North and South are insufficient to drive the country in the right direction. He emphasized that effective leadership and a cohesive team are essential for fostering positive development in Nigeria.

“We must correct our approach to leadership and teamwork. Within two and a half years, we could overcome our challenges,” Obasanjo remarked. He cautioned that Nigeria is on the brink of significant turmoil if its leaders fail to act decisively on pressing issues.

Obasanjo continued, “In another decade, we need to build on what we have achieved, and in 25 years, we can reach our goals. Our problem is that we advance and then regress, which hampers our progress.”

He underscored the need for consensus in the African context, stressing the importance of collective effort to make progress. Obasanjo argued that whether the presidency is for a single six-year term or two four-year terms, the crucial factor is changing our mentality. “Our main problem lies with ourselves. Until we address these issues, the duration of office terms will be irrelevant. If the same individuals with the same mindset remain in power, no real change will occur.”

Ikenga, in his remarks, explained that the lawmakers visited Abeokuta, Ogun State, to seek Obasanjo’s insights and leverage his extensive experience in development and governance. He commended Obasanjo for the reforms implemented during his presidency and criticized subsequent governments for failing to build on these achievements. “Had there been consolidation of electricity reforms, foreign policies, civil service reforms, and digital advancements, we might not be facing the current economic difficulties,” Ikenga concluded.
