The former president made the comments while attending the event at the invitation of Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke. Obasanjo explained how he first learned of the false reports.
“I was called early in the morning by a close associate who asked me to check social media,” Obasanjo said. “I was shocked when I saw the rumor claiming that I had died at midnight. I couldn’t believe it.”
Obasanjo immediately reassured his family and close friends, sharing the news that the reports were untrue. “I told my family and friends not to worry. Those who wish me dead will not succeed,” he added.
Speaking in Yoruba during the event, Obasanjo questioned the motivations behind such harmful rumors. “Why would anyone wish me dead? Those who harbor such ill thoughts will not escape misfortune themselves,” he said.
The former president also expressed concern over the increasing spread of baseless news on social media. “This kind of rumor is not only disturbing but highlights how some people misuse technology. It is completely unacceptable,” Obasanjo stated.
