In an interview on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm on Tuesday, Shaibu revealed that he had initial doubts about Obaseki’s leadership even before they took office on November 12, 2016. Shaibu remarked, “Obaseki is not a politician. We made him governor, and Oshiomhole convinced us. I was not one of those who believed he should be governor because I didn’t trust him.”

He went on to say, “When he was nominated to run, I was the last person opposing him, but I was convinced out of respect. We trusted Comrade, not him.”

Reflecting on their first term in office, Shaibu recalled how their political structure was reshaped to accommodate Obaseki, placing trust in Oshiomhole’s vision for the state. However, he noted that the second term presented a completely different political environment.

He added, “We dismantled our structure and gave him everything. The second term, however, was a different scenario; it became a time of godfatherism in Edo State.”
