In response, the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has placed all its members nationwide on high alert, preparing for a potential strike if Ajaero is arrested.
The Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) had issued a summons on August 19, demanding Ajaero appear at the IRT office at the Force Headquarters on August 20. Failure to comply could result in arrest. The NLC, through its lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, notified the Inspector General of Police that Ajaero would not be able to attend the scheduled date but would be available on August 29. Falana also requested details of the allegations.
Reacting via X, Obi highlighted the gravity of the situation given Ajaero’s pivotal role as the leader of the nation’s workforce. He emphasized the need for careful handling of the issue, questioning whether the charges relate to Ajaero’s personal actions or his role as NLC President. Obi called for adherence to due process and rule of law, expressing concern that the government might use autocratic methods to suppress labor opposition.
In parallel, NUPENG’s General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale, issued a circular alerting members to prepare for action if the police arrest Ajaero. NUPENG expressed strong reservations about the police’s actions and the allegations against Ajaero, condemning the perceived encroachment on the NLC’s operations.
