The action is a protest against the ongoing kidnapping of their colleague, Dr. Stephen Ezeh, who has been held captive since August 15. Previously, on August 19, the NMA had warned of a potential strike if Ezeh was not released within 48 hours. However, with that deadline passing and no resolution despite appeals to the state government, the association has decided to escalate their response.
The statement read in part: “NMA Anambra hereby directs all doctors in the state to immediately withdraw clinical services across all federal, state, private, mission, institutional, and corporate hospitals until our member is released. Compliance with this directive will be strictly monitored by our ‘Strike Monitoring Team,’ and any hospitals or members that do not comply will face penalties as per congress resolutions.”
The NMA also urged the Anambra Government to deploy all available security resources to secure Ezeh’s prompt and unconditional release. The association acknowledged the inconvenience this service withdrawal will cause to the people of Anambra but emphasized the need for urgent action to restore normalcy in the healthcare system.
In their statement, the NMA praised Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, for their efforts in improving healthcare and security. They also commended doctors for their dedication to providing quality healthcare under challenging circumstances.
