Former presidential aide, Okoi Obono-Obla, has strongly criticized the suspension of embattled lawmaker Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who faces allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In an interview with Daily Post, he described the suspension as unjustified and overly harsh compared to similar instances. He pointed out that Senators Ali Ndume and Ovie Omo-Agege were each suspended for only 90 legislative days in previous cases.

Obono-Obla argued that the Senate should exemplify justice, truth, and the rule of law.

He stated, “The Senate is part of the National Assembly, which is constitutionally tasked with making laws for the peace, stability, and good governance of Nigeria.

“On March 30, 2017, Senator Mohammed Ndume was suspended for 90 legislative days for bringing disrepute to Senator Dino Melaye and the Senate. However, a Federal High Court led by Hon. Justice Qadiri ruled that the suspension was unlawful and unconstitutional.

“In the case of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege versus the Senate, the Court ruled that according to Senate Rules, a senator can only be suspended for 14 days, despite the Senate’s disciplinary powers. Omo-Agege’s 90-day suspension was overturned.”

He stressed that Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension defies the legal action she has already initiated at the Federal High Court. He further emphasized that Senate Rules dictate that a matter under judicial consideration (sub judice) should not have been debated by the Senate.
