The decision, announced in a communiqué following a meeting on Monday, highlighted dissatisfaction from the Imo Traditional Council, youth groups, market women, and religious leaders.
The communiqué revealed that the Imo Traditional Council, a key body in the selection process, was not consulted and was surprised by the news of Sogaolu’s installation by the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo.
According to DAILY POST, Governor Dapo Abiodun presented the staff of office to Sogaolu on July 26 in Obafemi, Owode Local Government Area. However, the Council expressed confidence in the governor’s commitment to legal and traditional norms, suggesting he might have been misinformed about the legitimacy of the process.
“The governor, known for upholding the rule of law, could not knowingly endorse such a disregard for established procedures,” the communiqué stated. It emphasized that Sogaolu, who lacks substantial ties to the community beyond his lineage, does not fulfill the necessary criteria. The Council believes an Oba should be a well-known resident with significant contributions to the town’s development.
The Council of Baales warned that the Alake’s actions might provoke unrest in the otherwise peaceful Orile-Imo. They stressed the need for a ruler who truly represents and has invested in the town.
“As law-abiding citizens, we will seek justice through all legal channels to ensure the community’s will is honored,” the communiqué concluded, indicating a readiness to pursue legal action.
The communiqué was signed by prominent baales, including Chief Durodola Fatai, Kola Jimoh, and Ogunjimi Olusoji.
