According to Naija News, Atiku’s tweet, posted on Tuesday night, opposed the use of lethal force against protesters advocating for an end to poor governance. He warned that security heads could be held accountable for any violence against peaceful protesters by military and other security forces.

Atiku’s statement highlighted the need for security agencies to protect protesters, asserting their constitutional right to demonstrate. He wrote, “I urge the service chiefs and military commanders to recognize that those who authorize lethal force against peaceful protesters will be held accountable for crimes against humanity, even after their retirement.”

In response, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, accused Atiku of endorsing violent protests occurring in states like Kaduna, Kano, Plateau, and Jigawa. Onanuga argued that Atiku’s caution should have been directed at the violent elements among the protesters rather than at the security agencies.

He contended that the rights to assembly and freedom of expression are not absolute and may be restricted for public safety and order. Onanuga praised the security forces for their professionalism and restraint and criticized Atiku for prioritizing personal interests over national stability.

The statement continued: “Atiku Abubakar’s tweet misrepresents the situation, encouraging a continued disruption. His focus should have been on the rioters who have hijacked the protests, rather than condemning the security forces who have acted with restraint. The right to protest does not justify destruction and violence, and it is disappointing that Atiku has not supported national stability.”

Onanuga compared Atiku unfavorably to opposition figures in the UK, like former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who supported the government in condemning riots and advocating for justice for those involved. He suggested that Atiku should adopt a similar approach to support national peace and order.
