Okocha-led APC Ignores Court Order, Proceeds With Rivers State CongressThe Tony Okocha-led faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State has proceeded with its state congress, defying a court order that had restricted the party’s national leadership from holding congresses in the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt had issued an ex parte order, preventing APC national chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and the party from conducting any elective congresses for the Rivers chapter without including the claimants in an ongoing legal dispute. The court order, which also barred the holding of the congresses scheduled for November 23 and 30, 2024, was issued pending the resolution of the case.
The lawsuit, filed by Okwu Joebrown-Ndike, Peace Oganu, and Samuel Uchegbule, accused the party of excluding them from the congress despite their payment for nomination forms.
However, in defiance of the court’s injunction, the Okocha faction proceeded with the congress, which was taking place at the factional secretariat along the Port Harcourt-Aba Expressway at the time of this report.
During the congress, the Okocha-led Caretaker Committee (CTC) was formally dissolved by the Chairman of the Congress Planning Committee, paving the way for new leadership elections. Prominent party members in attendance included Chief Victor Giadom, the South-South National Vice Chairman, as well as Chidi Wihioka, Ephraim Nwuzi, Magnus Abe, Tony Okocha, and other members of the caretaker committee that had been sacked by the court.
The leadership crisis within the Rivers State APC remains unresolved, with the party split between factions loyal to former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who supports the duly elected executive led by Chief Emeka Beke, and the Okocha faction, which aligns with former Governor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. The Beke-led executive’s tenure is set to end in 2025.
