Soyombo revealed that there is significant security protection for oil bunkerers in Nigeria, claiming that influential figures are involved in escorting illegal activities, particularly out of Port Harcourt.

“It would shock you the kind of people who escort illegal oil bunkerers,” Soyombo said. “The Army spokesman already compromised my security by publicly stating they found illegal bunkerers. There are clean individuals within the military, but we must root out the saboteurs who allow these criminal activities to continue.”

He emphasized that despite the dangers, he was determined to continue his work, though he suggested he may reduce the frequency of his undercover investigations due to the risks involved. “This is a new level for me, and I need to assess how I proceed. Instead of changing my approach, I might stop after a few more investigations,” he said.

Soyombo highlighted the seriousness of the issue, noting that the real scale of oil theft in Nigeria is being underestimated. He recounted an instance where a shipment of 50,000 barrels of crude was nearly moved out due to a breakdown in a bribery deal. “The figures being reported on crude oil theft do not reflect the true scale of what’s happening. If not for an angry insider, two trucks of crude would have been illegally moved out,” Soyombo revealed.

He also pointed out that the problem goes beyond the oil bunkerers, implicating those tasked with overseeing the sector. “It’s not just the bunkerers who are thieves but also the authorities meant to supervise them,” he said. “What we need is a complete overhaul of the system.”
