Ivie Atuwatse III, wife of Ogiame Atuwatse III, the 21st Olu of Warri, has opened up about her marriage to the monarch and his decision to embrace polygamy.

Speaking in an interview with BBC News Pidgin, the queen consort said one of the aspects she appreciates about being married to the traditional ruler is seeing the public recognise and celebrate his personality, achievements and qualities.

Ivie explained that she takes pride in watching people appreciate her husband, noting that she also admires and celebrates him privately. She said the public recognition of the monarch brings her happiness and makes her even prouder of him.

However, she acknowledged that being married to a traditional ruler also comes with its own challenges. According to her, the responsibilities attached to the Olu’s position often demand much of his time and can limit the couple’s opportunities to enjoy private moments together.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Ivie said she and the monarch have been learning to manage the demands of his traditional responsibilities while maintaining their relationship.

She further addressed the issue of her husband embracing polygamy, making it clear that she does not expect him to change his position on the matter. In a light-hearted remark, she said she considers herself sufficient for him, joking that she is like three women in one.

Ivie and Ogiame Atuwatse III have been married since 2014 and have children together. The monarch ascended the throne as the 21st Olu of Warri in 2021 following the death of his predecessor, Ogiame Ikenwoli.

The queen’s comments offer an insight into the couple’s experience of balancing their family life with the responsibilities and expectations that come with the traditional institution.
