As part of his visit, the Army Chief will address troops participating in Operation Fasan Yamma, the ongoing military operation aimed at combating terrorist activities in Nigeria’s northwest region.

Oluyede’s visit comes just three days after the Defence Headquarters confirmed the emergence of a new terrorist group called ‘Lakurawa,’ which has been causing unrest in Sokoto and Kebbi states. The group has been active in at least five local government areas in Sokoto State.

Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, stated that the Lakurawa group, which has contributed to the rising insecurity in the northwest, is linked to terror groups in the Sahel region, particularly in Mali and Niger. He explained that the group began its incursions into northern Nigeria through Sokoto and Kebbi states, crossing from the Niger and Mali borders.

“The Lakurawa group is affiliated with terrorist groups in the Sahel, particularly from Mali and Niger. They started their incursions into the northern part of Nigeria, mainly in Sokoto and Kebbi,” General Buba said. He further noted that the group’s emergence followed the breakdown in military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger after the recent coup in Niger.

In response to the growing security threats, the Nigerian military has declared nine individuals wanted for their involvement in the country’s ongoing security challenges. The military remains focused on neutralizing these threats and restoring stability to the region.
