Omotola Drops Bombshell: I’ve Worked For 30 Years And Never Received Royalties

Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has highlighted what she described as a major difference between working in Hollywood and Nollywood, particularly in the area of residual and royalty payments.

The actress disclosed that despite spending only about five years working in Hollywood, she continues to receive payments from some of her previous projects in the form of residuals and royalties.

According to Omotola, her experience in Nigeria has been markedly different, as she claimed that three decades of working in Nollywood have not resulted in her receiving a single royalty payment.

She made the disclosure while discussing the disparity in compensation structures between the two film industries and the long-term financial benefits available to actors after completing projects.

The actress explained that she regularly receives envelopes containing payments connected to her past Hollywood work, despite having spent considerably less time in the American film industry.

She contrasted this with her 30-year career in Nollywood, saying she had never received a similar payment for her work in the Nigerian film industry.

Omotola jokingly suggested that the people responsible for such payments in Nollywood might not know where she lives.

Her comments have drawn attention to the broader issue of residuals and royalties in Nollywood, particularly the need for actors and other industry professionals to benefit financially when films featuring their work continue to generate revenue or are repeatedly distributed and exhibited.

The revelation has also sparked fresh discussion about contractual arrangements, intellectual property rights and the financial structures governing Nigeria’s rapidly growing film industry.
