In an appearance on Arise TV, Onanuga was questioned about President Tinubu’s decision to retain Matawalle in his cabinet during a recent reshuffle that saw other ministers let go. He acknowledged that there have been numerous claims regarding Matawalle’s alleged involvement in insecurity in Zamfara State, which have even reached the President’s ears.
However, Onanuga stated that these allegations were thoroughly investigated by the National Security Adviser’s office and deemed false. He emphasized that Matawalle has a clean record and is well-qualified to continue in his role.
“As far as I know, most of those allegations are just that—allegations. I raised some of these claims with the NSA, and he confirmed they were not accurate. People are fabricating stories about him,” Onanuga explained. He added that the fact that Matawalle remains in his position indicates the credibility of the investigations.
Notably, both Matawalle and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal have previously accused each other of being involved in banditry.
