One Year Of Tinubu’s Leadership: Successes and Struggles....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

On May 29, 2023, Bola Tinubu was sworn in as the sixteenth President of Nigeria, succeeding Muhammadu Buhari, who had served for eight years. At the inauguration at Eagle Square, Abuja, Tinubu, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), declared in his speech, “Subsidy is gone.” Subsequently, he floated the naira to compete with the dollar, aiming to stabilize the volatile forex market………CONTINUE READING

Although the administration officially removed the petrol subsidy through the Petroleum Industrial Act, it provided for the product until the end of June 2023. Nigeria has long depended on oil and gas revenues to sustain the government. However, the sudden removal of the subsidy by Tinubu’s administration has significantly impacted the economy and standard of living, leading to unprecedented levels of hunger.

In the weeks following his inauguration, prices of food, transportation, and essential goods soared. Hunger and lamentation became widespread. Despite the worsening electricity supply, tariffs increased. The exchange rate deteriorated, making the naira weaker. Accessing medical care or buying medicines became unaffordable for many. These issues stemmed from the removal of the petrol subsidy and other tough decisions made by the administration.

Critics argue that the Tinubu administration’s start was even rougher than Buhari’s, which some had labeled a wasted eight years. The subsidy crisis strained relations between the President and organized labor, and the administration’s first year has seen a heavy tax burden. Recently, the Central Bank of Nigeria introduced the Cybersecurity levy, generating public outcry, though Tinubu eventually suspended the policy.

As Tinubu’s administration marks one year, opinions on his performance are divided. Some believe that the country’s pre-existing economic and social issues are not entirely his fault and argue that tough decisions were necessary to prevent further decline. Supporters highlight the policies and team of cabinet members aimed at long-term benefits, though many still await tangible results.

Tinubu has assured Nigerians of his commitment to transforming the nation despite challenges. At a recent meeting with Yoruba Leaders of Thought, he acknowledged the past year’s difficulties but promised that the worst is over and Nigeria will move towards prosperity. He emphasized that his administration will ensure value for money spent and leave a legacy of prosperity for future generations.

The President also called for stronger governance at all levels, promoting fiscal federalism and ensuring the responsibilities of state and federal governments are upheld. He stressed the importance of synergy between state governors and federal initiatives to achieve the administration’s goals.

Experts argue that while some of Tinubu’s economic policies may currently feel suffocating, they will eventually benefit Nigeria. The administration’s focus on attracting long-term investments is seen as a positive step towards economic growth.

In his first year, Tinubu has shown himself to be a leader who listens to the people’s concerns. When the Student Loan Act needed adjustments, he promptly returned it to the National Assembly for revisions. His administration is also focused on providing direct economic relief through grants, education loans, and other support programs.

Notable appointees like the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, have made significant strides in their respective roles. Tunji-Ojo has reformed the Nigeria Immigration Service, reducing the backlog of passports and improving service delivery. Umahi has been advocating for concrete pavements over asphalt for road construction, citing cost-effectiveness and durability.

In the Federal Capital Territory, former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, now the Minister, has initiated numerous quality road projects, changing the landscape in less than ten months.

Despite the economic challenges, Tinubu remains focused on his Renewed Hope Agenda, urging Nigerians to be patient and promising that the administration’s efforts will eventually yield positive results. As his administration continues to navigate the complexities of governance, the President remains committed to delivering on his promises and improving the lives of Nigerians
