OPay Scandal: Arrested Lady Makes U-Turn, Apologises Over False Shutdown Post

An apology issued by a Nigerian woman who shared a false notice claiming that fintech company OPay was shutting down its operations has surfaced online following her arrest by the police.

The woman, identified by the Nigeria Police Force as 27-year-old Hafsat Abubakar, had earlier admitted sharing the information and apologised to OPay over the misleading post.

The apology was published on her X account, @haifah_er_abba, on August 31, 2026, several days before she was reportedly arrested by police operatives.

In the post addressed to OPay, Abubakar explained that she had circulated information claiming the fintech company would suspend its operations indefinitely from September 1. According to her, the information had already been circulating for several days before she shared it on her account.

She later acknowledged that the information was false and misleading, adding that she had removed the post after discovering the truth.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Abubakar expressed regret over the incident and apologised to OPay for any inconvenience caused by the circulation of the information.

The development came shortly before the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre announced her arrest over the alleged creation and circulation of the fabricated OPay shutdown notice.

The police said OPay Digital Services Limited submitted a petition on August 31, requesting an investigation into the origin of the fake document.

The NPF-NCCC further stated that digital forensic investigations traced the document to the X account @haifah_er_abba, which it alleged was registered and operated by Abubakar.

Police operatives reportedly arrested the 27-year-old woman on September 4 as investigations into the matter continued.
