OPay Threatens Legal Action Against X User Over Viral Shutdown Claim

Digital payment company OPay has threatened to take legal action against an X user over a social media post alleging that the fintech firm would shut down its operations on September 1, 2026.

The user, identified as Cute Hafserh (@Haifah_Er_Abba), reportedly shared the claim online, prompting OPay to issue a formal warning and demand the immediate removal of the post.

According to Bush Radio Academy, OPay, through its Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Moses Rokosu, accused the X user of spreading information it described as false and misleading, alleging that the publication had caused harm to the company.

The company directed the user to delete the post and warned that failure to do so could result in legal action.

The controversy followed an earlier clarification by OPay denying reports that it planned to suspend its operations from September 1. The clarification came after the alleged shutdown rumour gained traction across social media platforms.

OPay assured customers that its services would continue operating normally and urged members of the public to disregard what it described as unverified claims regarding its operations.

In its latest warning to the X user, the company said it would not overlook the publication or circulation of information it considered false or misleading.

OPay stated, “OPay takes the publication and circulation of false and misleading information seriously.

“This is a formal warning against the continued publication and circulation of false and misleading information concerning OPay.

“If you’re considering spreading false information about OPay, consider this your warning.”

The development has drawn attention online as OPay moves to counter the shutdown claim and protect its reputation amid the circulation of unverified information on social media.
