Osimhen And Onuachu Soar: Nigerian Stars Among Football’s Top Aerial Threats

Osimhen currently sits fifth worldwide for the highest recorded jump after his incredible 2.58-metre leap during Napoli’s 3-0 victory over Spezia in February 2023. His header, scored in the 68th minute, saw him soar above goalkeeper Bartlomiej Dragowski to extend Napoli’s lead at the Stadio Alberto Picco.
The Nigerian striker’s explosive vertical leap remains one of his most defining attributes, contributing to his reputation as one of the most feared attackers in modern football. This season, he has already scored nine goals in 12 appearances for Galatasaray across all competitions.
Cristiano Ronaldo still holds the top spot with a 2.93-metre leap for Real Madrid against Manchester United in the 2013 Champions League round of 16. Morocco’s Youssef En-Nesyri follows with a 2.78-metre header against Portugal in the 2022 World Cup, while Uganda’s Bevis Mugabi and England’s Fikayo Tomori round out the top aerial performers with jumps of 2.62 and 2.61 metres, respectively.
Onuachu also shines in the bicycle kick rankings, standing second globally after his overhead strike against Fatih Karagumruk in the Turkish Super Lig last year, which measured 2.41 metres, surpassing Ronaldo’s previous best of 2.38 metres.
Scott McTominay now leads the bicycle kick category following his acrobatic finish in Scotland’s World Cup qualifying win over Denmark on 18 November. The Scottish midfielder reached 2.53 metres, elevating himself 0.62 metres above his natural height of 1.91 metres to meet Ben Gannon-Doak’s cross. Ronaldo has since moved down to third in this ranking, with McTominay and Onuachu now ahead.
Onuachu has maintained excellent form this season, scoring nine goals and providing one assist in 13 league matches for Trabzonspor.
