Three persons have been confirmed dead, while five others were rescued alive after a two-storey commercial building collapsed in Zone 8, Oke Alaafia Community, Owode Ede, Osun State.

The incident occurred late Friday night, October 30, 2026, trapping several people beneath the debris of the building and triggering an overnight search and rescue operation by emergency responders.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Osun State Command, confirmed the casualties in a statement issued on Saturday, October 31. The statement was signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSF Ojo Omoyemi Olamide, who disclosed that an emergency call was received at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Friday.

He explained that the command immediately deployed its fire appliance, FFS 141, which arrived at the scene three minutes later. The rescue team was led by DSF Ogunremi, while AIF Adeyemi served as the driver.

The collapsed structure was identified as a two-storey shopping complex containing six shops on the upper floor, six shops on the middle floor and two stores on the ground floor. The commercial building reportedly covered an estimated area of 50 metres by 100 metres.

Preliminary investigations indicated that possible structural defects and the use of substandard building materials might have contributed to the collapse.

During the rescue operation, five victims were pulled out alive from beneath the rubble and immediately transported to Idera Specialist Hospital, Ede, for urgent medical treatment. However, three other victims were recovered without signs of life and subsequently handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force attached to A Division, Ede.

The operation involved personnel of the Federal Fire Service and the Osun State Fire Service, Ede Station, with additional support from the police and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

The police team was led by SP Bamidele, while CSC Oyekunle headed the NSCDC personnel from the Owode Ede Division.

The rescue exercise lasted several hours and was concluded in the early hours of Saturday, with the responding team returning to its station at approximately 9:26 a.m.

The Federal Fire Service estimated the value of property destroyed in the collapse at about ₦100 million, while assets worth approximately ₦150 million were reportedly saved through the emergency response.

The command expressed sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives and called on residents, property developers and building owners to strictly observe approved construction regulations and safety standards.

It also urged members of the public to report emergencies promptly to the relevant authorities to ensure swift intervention and reduce the risk of further casualties and property damage.
