OsunDecides2026: Chaos As Police Allegedly Fire Tear Gas At Voters, Election Officials

Voters and election officials at a Registration Area Centre (RAC) in Ife East Local Government Area of Osun State have alleged that personnel of the Nigeria Police Force fired tear gas at them in an attempt to intimidate voters ahead of the ongoing governorship election.

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday at Ward 10, Modakeke III, in Ife East Local Government Area.

According to reports, voters and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had gathered at the RAC centre and were preparing to proceed to their respective polling units with election materials when the alleged incident occurred.

Sources at the scene claimed that police operatives deployed tear gas in an attempt to discourage residents from coming out to vote and monitor the electoral process.

One of the sources said the situation became tense after the alleged firing of tear gas at people gathered at the centre.

The source said voters and INEC officials had already assembled and were ready to move to their various polling units with the election materials when the incident occurred.

The source further alleged that the action was intended to create fear and discourage residents from participating in the election or monitoring the process.
