Edu made this announcement during an event commemorating the International Day of the Disappeared, held at the National Human Rights Commission on August 30.
Speaking on her behalf, Ali Grema, the Director of Humanitarian Affairs, stressed the need for a more effective mechanism to enhance the reporting and forensic tracking of missing persons’ cases in the country.
Edu emphasized that the reported 25,000 missing individuals in Nigeria primarily result from the insurgency in the North East.
However, she noted that this number likely represents only a portion of the actual cases, highlighting the necessity for an improved system to ascertain and track missing persons accurately. The minister pointed out that the precise number of disappearances in the country has yet to be determined.
