Addressing the issue in Ibadan, the Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, Arch. Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, expressed that sealing the church premises was the only viable option to prevent potential escalation of tensions between the residents and the church on Sundays.

Members of the community had previously taken matters into their own hands by locking the estate gate to prevent church services from taking place.

Mogbonjubola emphasized the government’s commitment to preventing any form of escalation, stating that the administration would not stand idly by in the face of such situations.

The Commissioner revealed that the Ministry had received numerous complaints from neighboring residents regarding the incessant noise emanating from the church. Following official letters and phone calls, Ministry officials visited the area on Thursday, November 9, 2023, to assess the situation.

During their visit, the team recorded sound levels at different intervals, discovering that the average reading during praise-worship was Seventy-four (74) decibels (daytime). This contravened the Extant Environmental Regulations of 2023, Section 58, Paragraph (b), which stipulates that noise limits for residential areas during the daytime must not exceed 65 decibels. The church’s activities were found to constitute noise pollution.

Despite a resolution meeting held on November 29, 2023, in the Ministry’s conference room, where the Church declined to sign an undertaking letter, citing the need for approval from its Headquarters, the church continued to be non-compliant. This ultimately led to the decision to seal the church, marking the latest development in the ongoing crisis.
