He revealed that Yar’Adua made significant efforts to persuade him, including a two-hour conversation aimed at convincing him to join the cabinet. Despite the president’s insistence, Utomi suggested seven other individuals who could serve effectively in his place.

“I’ve been offered a ministerial position before, and I declined. The most notable was from President Yar’Adua. He spent nearly two hours trying to convince me to accept. But I told him my hesitation wasn’t about holding office—I’ve studied political science extensively,” Utomi recounted.

He added that African politics often involves co-opting strong opposition voices into government roles, only to neutralize their influence.

“In post-colonial Africa, there’s a pattern—a strong dissenting voice is brought into government just to dilute or suppress it,” he explained.

Utomi said the late president respected his position but believed Utomi could make a stronger impact from within the administration.

“We met at his residence in the Villa that Friday. I told him I’m a patriot—you can wake me at 2 a.m. to ask for my honest opinion, and you’ll get it. But I advised him instead to appoint seven capable individuals who could drive real progress in key ministries.”

He emphasized that those genuinely seeking to serve should be prioritized, while others more interested in contracts and personal gain could be handled differently.

“Let the job-seekers chase contracts. Just appoint seven good people to lead essential ministries—and the government will function effectively.”
