Peter Obi, Gov Otti Urge INEC To Acknowledge Nenadi-Led Caretaker Committee

Labour Party leaders Peter Obi and Governor Alex Otti have formally notified the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the establishment of a 29-member Caretaker Committee, headed by Nenadi Usman.

The notification was submitted in accordance with an agreement between the Labour Party and INEC from 2022. The letter explained that the recent leadership turmoil within the party necessitated the formation of this new committee.

Signed by Obi and Otti on behalf of other key stakeholders, the letter details that the Caretaker Committee is tasked with organizing congresses and national conventions within a 180-day period. This step is aimed at addressing the leadership void left by the dissolution of the Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC) by INEC, effective June 2024.

The letter stated: “As you are aware, the Labour Party has experienced a leadership crisis recently, resulting in INEC’s de-recognition of the Abure-led NWC as of June 2024. In response, the statutory executives, including the Governor, Deputy Governor, legislators, surviving NEC members, organized labour leaders, and representatives from the 2023 elections, convened in Umuahia, Abia State on September 4, 2024. They have set up the Caretaker Committee to conduct congresses and a national convention within 180 days to fill the leadership gap left by the previous administration’s term expiration.”
