Speaking on Trust TV on Sunday, Dalung explained that Obi once told him during a private conversation that the quest for a second term has been one of the major factors undermining Nigeria’s democracy.

According to Dalung, Obi said, “The idea of a single term has nothing to do with coalition. It is simply my conviction. I believe what has destroyed our democracy is the obsession with a second term. A single term is enough to make an impact—whatever you want to achieve, you can do it within that time.”

Dalung added that Obi believes leaders often become distracted by re-election ambitions, abandoning governance as early as their second year in office to focus on political manoeuvring.
