Peter Obi Shares Insights On Breaking The Poverty Cycle In Nigeria

Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, emphasized the transformative potential of investing in Nigeria’s agricultural sector during his recent visit to Kebbi State. He stressed that strategic investments and effective production in agriculture could significantly uplift millions of Nigerians from poverty.

During his visit, Obi underscored the importance of prioritizing agricultural investments by both the Kebbi State government and stakeholders. He pointed out the vast agricultural lands available in Kebbi and the wider North West geopolitical zone, drawing parallels with countries like Ukraine, which despite having smaller cultivated land areas, has been able to supply grains to Nigeria.

Obi asserted that a robust agricultural sector could play a crucial role in addressing various challenges facing Nigeria, including insecurity, poverty, inflation, and food scarcity. He urged the Federal Government to shift its focus towards agriculture, citing Nigeria’s abundance of uncultivated land, especially in the northern region, as a significant asset.

“The potential of agriculture to lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty cannot be overstated. It is not only essential for ensuring food security and reducing hunger but also serves as a vital foreign exchange earner,” Obi emphasized.

During his visit, Obi commended Kebbi State’s agricultural potential and its capacity to contribute significantly to national food production. He also engaged in charitable activities, providing Ramadan breakfast to 100 Muslim faithful and commissioning a solar-powered borehole at Hutawa Fulani settlement.

Additionally, Obi held discussions with key figures including the Emir of Gwandu, Alhaji Muhammad Illiyasu Bashar, and Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State. Governor Idris reiterated his administration’s commitment to investing in human capacity development and agriculture as drivers of economic growth.

In response, Emir Muhammad Illiyasu Bashar urged Nigerian leaders to heed Obi’s insights and recommendations, acknowledging the value of his perspectives on addressing Nigeria’s challenges. He expressed gratitude for Obi’s visit during Ramadan and highlighted the importance of adopting strategies for national prosperity outlined by leaders like Obi.
