Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has declined an honour proposed by the management of Our Lady of Lourdes School of Nursing and Midwifery, Ihiala, to name a newly constructed administrative building after him.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
During Obi’s visit to the institution on Thursday, the college administrator, Rev. Fr. Chidiebere Ughaerumba, announced the management’s intention to name the five-storey structure in recognition of Obi’s longstanding support to the school.
However, the former Labour Party presidential candidate politely rejected the idea, insisting that it was inappropriate to name any public structure after him or his family.
He said,
“I don’t support such plans. When I was governor, almost every community wanted to give me a chieftaincy title, but I declined. Even my alma mater wanted to honour me with a doctorate, and I refused. I was offered a national award, and I said it should come after my tenure. Some local governments even wanted to name streets after me, but I said no.”
Obi explained that he preferred to channel his resources toward improving education and healthcare rather than receiving personal accolades.
“This week alone, I have visited five schools and donated between ₦5 million and ₦15 million to each. I could have used that money to buy a new car or host a party, but I believe it’s better to invest in institutions like yours,” he added.
To back his words with action, Obi presented a ₦15 million cheque to the college, emphasizing that his contributions were part of his ongoing effort to strengthen key sectors that benefit the public.
