Peoples Gazette reported that demonstrators took to the streets of Minna, the capital of Niger state, expressing grievances over the soaring cost of food and severe hunger experienced during Mr. Tinubu’s tenure.
Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson for the Niger state police, confirmed the arrest of Aisha Jibrin, the protest leader, along with 24 others.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Amnesty International condemned the Nigerian authorities for apprehending Aisha Jibrin, Fatima Aliyu, Fatima Isyaku, and twenty-two others in Minna, Niger state, for participating in the protest against the nationwide cost of living crisis.
These arrests occurred within nine months of Mr. Tinubu’s governance.
A market survey conducted at Mararaba Market, Nasarawa State, revealed that food prices have surged by nearly 100 percent compared to May 2023 when Mr. Tinubu assumed office.
Inflation soared following Mr. Tinubu’s announcement of the removal of petrol subsidies and the subsequent policy by the CBN to float the naira. Petrol prices surged from N145 per litre to N630, while the naira depreciated against the dollar at the parallel market, trading at about N1,500 to $1.
Nigerians have raised concerns about economic hardship, with inflation and food prices skyrocketing during Mr. Tinubu’s administration. Earlier in the week, protests erupted in two northern states, Niger and Kano, over soaring food prices.
Some Yoruba market women in Ogun criticized Mr. Tinubu for implementing economic policies that adversely affect the prices of goods and inflict hardships on Nigerians, even threatening to confront the president if they encounter him.
Acknowledging the country’s prevalent hardships, Mr. Tinubu urged Nigerians to remain patient, stating, “The financial re-engineering of our country is ongoing. We are determined to lead Nigeria safely through the tunnel of hope, stability, and economic prosperity.”
Sowore stated via his X handle: “I have just received information that the woman who initiated the food price protest in Niger State has been arrested by the @@PoliceNG for organizing this heroic act, she and other women are to be arraigned by the Police. The police must release them immediately. These women are going to be more of these uprising coming the way of Nigeria.”
