In a recent development in Delta State, a total of nine individuals have been apprehended in connection to the heinous killings of police officers in the Ughelli region, as confirmed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun during a crucial force management meeting held on Thursday.
These arrests mark a significant stride in the ongoing investigation, with the captured suspects currently cooperating by furnishing vital information to aid in the apprehension of the perpetrators responsible for the tragic incident.
The unfortunate event unfolded on February 23, 2024, when six police officers met their untimely demise in the depths of Ohoro forest, situated within the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. Shockingly, six other suspects linked to the killings are still evading capture.
Notably, these distressing occurrences coincide with the tragic loss of 17 military personnel in the oil-rich Delta State, who fell victim to an attack while on a peacekeeping mission in the Okuama community of Ughelli South Local Government Area. This barbaric act has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation throughout the nation.
In the wake of this tragedy, the military authorities, at the solemn burial ceremony for the fallen soldiers, solemnly pledged to relentlessly pursue the perpetrators of this heinous act, reaffirming their unwavering commitment to combat criminal activities within the country’s borders.
Furthermore, President Bola Tinubu paid tribute to the deceased soldiers by posthumously awarding them national honors and extending scholarships to support the education of their children.
Amidst these challenges, it remains imperative for all stakeholders to unite in the fight against such egregious acts of violence, ensuring justice for the fallen heroes and safeguarding the security and stability of our nation.
