The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, conveyed this caution in an official statement, urging the public to refrain from participating in such activities due to the legal consequences associated with this criminal act.
The advisory comes in response to the increasing incidents of self-kidnapping witnessed in various locations, leading to the apprehension of suspects in both Lagos and Abuja.
In a specific case in Lagos, a couple found themselves in legal trouble after being arrested for an alleged self-kidnapping scheme with the intention of extorting a N5 million ransom. The husband, Doubara David Yabrifa, a 53-year-old technician, and the wife Regina Yabrifa, a 48-year-old body massager and bone setter, were taken into custody following a report by a family member. The couple admitted to orchestrating the self-kidnap as a means to raise N3 million for the purchase of a property in Badagry, Lagos. The husband cited financial difficulties and lack of support from relatives as justifications for their actions. Both individuals were subsequently arrested and charged to court.
In another instance, Albarka Sukuya of Jenta Apata, Jos, gained notoriety for repeatedly staging his own kidnapping, extracting ransoms from unsuspecting members of the community in Plateau State.
Moreover, on January 20, 2024, a young man named Nnamdi Agu attempted to fake his own kidnapping in Abuja with the aim of defrauding a family member residing around River Park Estate, Abuja. The police promptly intervened, thwarting the staged kidnapping and apprehending the suspect.
The police emphasized the trend of individuals exploiting the prevalent instances of kidnapping and resorting to criminal and deceptive acts like self-kidnapping to make money. These cases are indicative of a broader issue that the police are actively addressing.
The Nigeria Police Force, in its cautionary statement, urges the public to be vigilant against this emerging trend. It also warns potential perpetrators to desist from engaging in such criminal acts, assuring that the police will spare no effort in ensuring that suspects face the full consequences of the law.
The statement further calls on the media, social media influencers, bloggers, and other information disseminators to verify news thoroughly before broadcasting, to avoid creating panic and undermining security arrangements.
