In a nationwide broadcast, Tinubu announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu for six months, while also imposing a state of emergency in the state.
Atiku argued that Tinubu could not escape responsibility for the chaos that his administration has either enabled or failed to prevent in Rivers State.
Atiku said, “The declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State reeks of political manipulation and bad faith. Anyone observing the unfolding crisis knows that Bola Tinubu has been a key player in the political turmoil in Rivers. His refusal or deliberate negligence to stop this escalation is nothing short of disgraceful.
“Beyond the political maneuvers in Rivers, the security lapses that led to the destruction of national infrastructure in the state lie squarely at the President’s feet.
“Tinubu cannot escape responsibility for the chaos his administration has either caused or failed to prevent. Under his leadership, the Niger Delta has been pushed back into an era of violence and instability, undoing the progress made under the late President Umaru Yar’Adua. Years of peace have been recklessly undone in the pursuit of selfish political interests.
“If federal infrastructure in Rivers has been damaged, the President is fully accountable. Punishing the people of Rivers State for the political squabbles between the governor and Tinubu’s allies in the federal government is an attack on democracy and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.”
