Political Earthquake In Kwara As APC Members Defect To PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State has suffered a fresh political setback after hundreds of its members in key wards announced their defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the latest defections were recorded in Shawo Central Ward in Offa Local Government Area, the political base of Kwara South Senator Lola Ashiru, as well as the political ward associated with Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

In Shawo Central Ward, the defectors were led by Ezekiel Adepoju, who said the group decided to leave the APC because of its confidence in the leadership of former Senate President and PDP chieftain, Bukola Saraki.

Adepoju said the defectors believed the PDP offered a better political platform for advancing the interests and aspirations of people in Offa and Kwara State.

The declaration was followed by a show of support from women in the ward, who reportedly turned out in large numbers for a solidarity procession. The women moved through parts of the community, singing traditional songs and expressing their support for Saraki and the PDP.

They also pledged to mobilise voters across Offa Local Government Area for the opposition party ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a separate development, another group of APC members from Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s political ward also announced their decision to join the PDP.

The group, led by Taofeek Mohammed, attributed its defection to what it described as disappointment with the APC administration and concerns over the direction of governance in Kwara State.

Mohammed argued that the movement of supporters from the governor’s own political base carried significant political implications ahead of the 2027 elections.

He maintained that political strength should be determined by the confidence and support of the electorate rather than government publicity or social media claims.

The defectors subsequently pledged to work for the growth of the PDP at the grassroots and mobilise additional support for the party as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.

The developments have added another dimension to the growing battle between the APC and PDP for grassroots influence in Kwara, particularly in communities linked to prominent political figures.
