Speaking in Abuja on Thursday after inspecting ongoing projects, Wike said the PDP was not in a position to mount a serious presidential challenge without first addressing its internal crises and structural weaknesses.
Reacting to criticisms from former Anambra PDP Chairman Dan Ulasi and other party leaders over his relationship with the presidency, Wike insisted his stance was based on political reality rather than sentiment.
He accused some of his critics of lacking electoral credibility, pointing to the PDP’s performance in Anambra State as evidence that they had failed to deliver meaningful political results.
The FCT minister also suggested that some of those attacking him might eventually defect to other parties, including the Labour Party.
According to Wike, the PDP cannot simply focus on contesting elections without rebuilding its internal structure from the grassroots upward.
He disclosed that some unnamed presidential hopefuls within the party had privately admitted that winning the last presidential election would have been difficult because of the PDP’s internal divisions and organisational problems.
Wike maintained that the party’s route back to political relevance lies in comprehensive restructuring at the ward, local government, and state levels before pursuing another presidential ambition.
He further stressed that elections are largely influenced by local political realities, warning that electoral success in one state should not automatically be seen as a guarantee of nationwide victory.
