Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a Town Hall meeting organized by the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria in Makurdi, Idoko condemned the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu. He also raised concerns over alleged plans by certain individuals to create instability in Benue, potentially paving the way for a similar intervention.

He cautioned that these plots might already be unfolding and called on Governor Alia to take decisive action to prevent a crisis.

“Some individuals are beginning to entertain similar ideas in Benue State. I am aware of this, and I know some are actively pushing for it. However, I trust that Governor Alia will act swiftly to contain the situation. He must heed wise counsel and implement necessary measures to ensure that Benue does not spiral into chaos that could justify a state of emergency,” Idoko warned.

He further described the state of emergency in Rivers as unnecessary and a blemish on Nigeria’s democracy, expressing concerns about its long-term implications.

“It is disheartening that the President has taken such a stance. This move could set a dangerous precedent. I sincerely hope it does not embolden young military officers with the wrong ideas. Let’s call a spade a spade,” he remarked.
