Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has dismissed concerns about a possible impeachment following the Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday, which reinstated the 27 lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The court’s verdict reshaped the political landscape by ordering the Federal Government to withhold Rivers State’s financial allocations until Fubara presents the state budget to the pro-Wike lawmakers, led by Martins Amaewhule. Additionally, it nullified the local government elections conducted by Fubara’s administration last year.

Intensified Political Crisis

With the Supreme Court ruling strengthening the pro-Wike lawmakers, the ongoing battle between Fubara and his former political mentor, Wike, has escalated.

Since October 2023, the Rivers State House of Assembly has been deeply divided—27 lawmakers backing Wike, while four remain loyal to Fubara.

An earlier impeachment attempt by the pro-Wike faction led to chaos, including the bombing of the Assembly complex. In defiance, Fubara presented the 2024 and 2025 budgets to the four-member Assembly loyal to him. However, the Supreme Court ruled his actions illegal and directed him to submit the budget to the pro-Wike lawmakers.

Despite this setback, Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, dismissed fears of impeachment, insisting that the governor retains the people’s mandate.

“Afraid of what? The governor has the mandate of the Rivers people. He will obey the law and respect its sanctity.”

Johnson added that the government was awaiting the Certified True Copy of the judgment before deciding on its next steps.

He also reaffirmed the government’s stance that Amaewhule and the 26 other pro-Wike lawmakers lost their legislative seats after defecting from the PDP to the APC.

Rivers Elders Oppose Reconciliation with Wike

Meanwhile, the Rivers State Elders Forum has rejected any move to reconcile with Wike and the 27 lawmakers, despite the Supreme Court ruling.

Speaking on behalf of the elders, High Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, National Coordinator of the South-South Elders Forum, stated that Rivers State will not bow to political pressure.
