The order was issued on Saturday by the Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice, which said the measure was necessary to maintain continuity of government in light of what it described as the president’s “forced absence.”

In its ruling, the court instructed Rodríguez to assume the duties of President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to ensure uninterrupted administration and safeguard national interests.

The court also announced plans to hold further deliberations to establish the appropriate legal framework for managing the unfolding situation.

According to the ruling, the justices will examine the circumstances to determine the legal measures required to preserve state continuity, govern effectively, and defend national sovereignty during the president’s absence.

Maduro was taken into custody early Saturday during an operation conducted by U.S. forces, an action that has triggered strong political and diplomatic reactions both domestically and abroad.

The Supreme Court’s decision effectively places Rodríguez at the helm of the executive branch pending further legal and political developments.

Meanwhile, Maduro has reportedly arrived in New York, where he is expected to face trial on arms trafficking and drug-related charges.
