In a landmark gesture underscoring decades of robust ties, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday conferred the national honor of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The ceremony, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, marked a pivotal moment in bilateral relations between the two dynamic democracies. President Tinubu described the honor as a testament to Nigeria’s recognition of India as a vital partner in its aspirations for growth and stability.

“Our partnership with India spans decades of mutual respect, shared values, and a vision for a brighter future. This honor reflects our commitment to deepen this relationship for the benefit of our citizens and the Global South,” Tinubu said during bilateral talks.

Prime Minister Modi, in his acceptance remarks, dedicated the recognition to the people of India, emphasizing the strategic importance of collaboration between the two nations. He highlighted how Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agendaaligns with India’s Develop India 2047 vision, fostering opportunities for economic growth, cultural exchange, and technological advancement.

“We are two vibrant democracies with common aspirations. Together, we can elevate the interests of our people and provide leadership for the Global South,” Modi remarked.

The meeting also witnessed the signing of new agreements in cultural exchange, customs collaboration, and surveying, alongside Prime Minister Modi’s announcement of 20 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Nigeria for flood relief efforts.

The leaders reiterated their commitment to addressing global challenges, from counter-terrorism to maritime security, positioning their partnership as a beacon of progress for the developing world.
