In a statement released on Monday by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s special adviser on information and strategy, Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to justice and reconciliation, especially for communities impacted by historical wrongs.

The executed activists, known as the “Ogoni Nine,” include Ken Saro-Wiwa, Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine. Saro-Wiwa, a renowned writer and environmental advocate, led the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) in their protests against the environmental damage caused by oil extraction in the region.

Tinubu emphasized his administration’s focus on fostering national unity through dialogue and reconciliation among all Nigerian ethnic groups. He stressed that healing from past injustices is essential for progress.

The President stated, “We honor their memory by acknowledging their sacrifices and pledging to work toward a future of peace, justice, and sustainable development for all, especially the Niger Delta communities.”

MOSOP recently called on the federal government to exonerate Saro-Wiwa and the other activists, believing their exoneration would bring healing to the wounds in the hearts of many.
