Prophet Isa El-Buba Reveals Why He Abandoned Peter Obi, Sparks Fresh Political Drama

Plateau-based cleric Prophet Isa El-Buba has explained his decision to withdraw his support for Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election, citing what he described as a lack of courage on the part of the former Anambra State governor.

According to Bush Radio Academy, El-Buba previously supported Obi during the 2023 presidential election, when the former governor contested under the Labour Party. The cleric also played a role in mobilising support for Obi during the election.

However, El-Buba has since shifted his backing to Adewale Adebayo, the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), ahead of the 2027 election.

Speaking during an interview on the Mic On podcast hosted by journalist Seun Okinbaloye on Saturday, the cleric stressed that he still regards Obi as a good person but believes certain weaknesses have made it difficult for him to continue supporting his political ambition.

El-Buba identified courage as one of the most important qualities a political leader must possess, particularly when confronted with difficult circumstances and challenges.

According to him, a leader must be willing to take difficult decisions and defend the interests of the people even when doing so comes with personal or political risks.

The cleric said he had personally discussed some of his concerns with Obi and concluded that the former governor lacked the level of courage he expected from someone seeking to lead the country.

El-Buba stated that while Obi is “a nice man” and “not a bad man,” he believes the former governor’s perceived lack of courage is a major weakness.

He also criticised Obi’s decision to leave the Labour Party and pursue his political ambition through different political platforms, arguing that such moves contributed to his decision to withdraw his support.

El-Buba’s latest position marks a significant change from his stance during the 2023 election, when he actively backed Obi and helped mobilise support for his presidential bid.

His endorsement of Adebayo ahead of the 2027 election therefore signals a fresh political alignment as various candidates and supporters continue to position themselves ahead of the presidential contest.
